A photo of the original Deep Space Nine miniature before I painted it. In shape it looks very cool, it consists of a larger outer ring with another smaller ring in the middle, connected together with three equidistant arms, and three curved fang-like structures coming out both above and below the outer ring which give the station a bit of a predatory look. In colour though, it's a very bland grey/brown without very definition, and the yellow colour in the windows is misaligned with a lot of where the actual windows are.

And the same miniature but after painting! It's much darker now, with far more definition on all the edges where I've drybrushed it to a lighter grey, and the yellow on the windows is actually confined to the windows now.

@[email protected] has gotten really into Star Trek: Deep Space and a few weeks ago I remembered that I still had my collection of Star Trek Micro Machines miniatures that I got when I was in primary school, one of which was Deep Space Nine itself! From what I can tell the set was this limited edition collector's set, but the paint jobs on the ships aren't great, and the Deep Space Nine miniature in particular was quite bad.

I gave the miniature to @[email protected] to put on her desk but with it sitting on top of the monitor stand, it really blended in with the grey of the stand and yesterday she suggested I could repaint it, so I did! Black prime followed by a couple of layers of drybrushing, then just some yellow in the windows and bam, infinitely better. I didn't realise quite how munted it was until I was repainting it (the docking pylons are quite bent), but fortunately with the correct viewing angle you can manage to make it much less obvious. 😅

The text summary of the show says "When the Cardassian occupation of Bajor ended in 2369, the mining space-station Terok Nor was left abandoned, its systems ripped out. By invitation of the provisional Bajoran government, Starfleet stepped in to oversee the rebuilding and day-to-day operations of the newly christened Deep Space Nine. DS9 soon became a center of travel and commerce thanks to a newly found stable wormhole leading to the largely unexplored Gamma Quadrant."

And now nearly 122GB later, we have the entirety of Deep Space Nine encoded to H.264! 🥳 I played around a bit with H.265 but it only saved about 100MB or so an episode and took a fair bit longer to encode so I decided it wasn't worth it. I'm surprised at how good the resulting quality is given the source material is just standard definition, even when viewed on our 55" TV.

Speaking of encoding times, I'm also converting the special features as well and I don't know what it is about them compared to the actual episodes but they're taking an eternity. One of the features for Season 1 is 18 minutes long and it took 26 minutes to encode, versus an average of probably 8-10 minutes for an entire 45-minute episode of the show! The file size isn't even abnormally large, it's just taking ages. Having skipped through to see what was in it, there are a number of interviews from like 1992 that look like they were being played back through VHS so I wonder if it's just all the artifacts in those segments that's causing Handbrake to have to work a lot harder...

Yessss it is finally mine to own!

Unfortunately it's a US-region DVD set so the next step is going to be finding a region-free drive with which to rip it.

...although I have a vague memory of there being some relatively small number of region changes you were allowed to do on non-region-free drives, and I suspect the Apple SuperDrive I bought back with the original-gen MacBook Air waaaay back in 2008 probably has never had its region set more than once... 🤔

A photo of the elliptical showing 1349 calories burnt in an hour twenty-nine, and the iPad is paused at the very end of the last episode of Deep Space Nine, with the station itself slowly receding into the distance and a deep purple nebula behind it.

So I finished watching all of Star Trek: The Next Generation in September of 2020, and tonight have finished watching all seven seasons of Deep Space Nine!

I think this was my favourite Trek, I liked the darker and more shades of grey versus the unbridled optimism of TNG. As with TNG, it's always sad to finish a series you've been watching for ages. I bought the "What We Left Behind" documentary they made about DS9 a few years back, going to watch that on the weekend.

This was just delivered! I'm looking forward to watching it, though I need to actually finish all of Deep Space Nine first (I'm about half-way through the series right now).
