A photo of (most of) the terrain from the Kill Team: Tomb World box, it's a bunch of walls that all connect together with corner pieces. The designs on the walls have a geometric alien-robotic look, and in many places it looks like the alien-robotic section has been exposed underneath regular walls that have been damaged or rotted away. It's not Egyptian exactly, but the pillars on the corners of where all the walls connect to each other have that inverted-obelisk design to them. One section has a bunch of Necron warriors (think the un-fleshed machines from the Terminator movies) dormant in their recharging alcoves. The painting I've done is the brown stone that's covering the Necron walls so it looks like the stone is crumbling away and revealing the alien Necron technology underneath.

It's taken a while, but I've now got all of the base stonework done for my Tomb World terrain. 🫠 (The pieces off to the left are the fully-finished test ones I had done previously.)

The stone was definitely the largest job, theoretically it should be faster going now because there's much less left to paint in terms of surface area... various dark green bits like the archways built into some of the walls and a few other pieces, some glow effects, then it's just highlighting those various colours (including the base white of the Necron walls) to make them pop.

There's lots of cards and dice everywhere, and in middle are a bunch of variously-shaped tiles connected together that look like the inside of a set of buildings. There's four hero miniatures at the right (one heavily-armoured warrior woman with a sword, a vampire hunter with a long leather coat and a big hat, a steampunk dwarf, and a priest with a rich red robe and a big staff) plus two groups of hostile miniatures: a swarm of bats, and Radukar the Wolf who is a vampire and has two big wolf pelts including the heads draped over his shoulders

Our Warhammer Quest adventure continued with @[email protected] tonight, and it was an abject failure, and my brave dwarven warrior Dagnai is now permanently dead and can't be played anymore. 😭

We chose to do a Deliverance journey which in hindsight was a bad idea, but we wanted to try to reduce the fear level. From our previous roll at the end of the last game, Radukar the big bad was going to show up as the second hostile group, and right from the very outset he fucked us up. We've seen him a couple of times before but have managed to kill him before he could do too much damage, but the rolling in this game was absolutely atrocious. Dagnai was attacking some corpse rats and hits on a 3+, and out of four rolls he missed with three of them. @[email protected]'s character was taken out of action twice, and we were unable to stay sufficiently ahead of the gravetide and multiple times where we took two damage from it. We then had two of the huge Kosargi Nightguard show up, and at that point we gave up, there was no possible way we could survive. We rolled on the table at the end of the game as if everyone had been taken out of action, it's on a D12 and on a roll of one anyone out of action permanently dies, and I managed to roll a one for Dagnai. 😭😭

It means I'll need to start from Level 0 with his replacement, Brutogg Corpse-Eater though he'll level up faster assuming we're actually successful in the next mission. 😬 We should probably do a Scavenge journey next instead even though it'll increase fear, so we can get some more gear.

We went over to a friend's place today for a painting afternoon! My goal was to just put a dent in doing the base stone colour of my Tomb World terrain, I had half of one wall left and fifteen of the L-shaped wall connectors. I got the wall finished and two of the connectors, and did half of all the others (as in, one half of the L-shape: because they're a bit tricky to hold by only doing them half at a time it makes it easier to not put your fingers in wet paint). @[email protected] also painted her first miniature, a Tau Stealth Suit!

A photo of my home office desk. The desk itself is white, at the back in the middle mounted on a monitor arm is the new display, directly in front is my laptop sitting open, then in front of that is my split keyboard. On either side of the monitor are my two white speakers sitting on white speaker stands.

My LG monitor that I bought at the end of November 2021 is on the fritz, several times now I've come back to it and it's had image retention and flickering, and on one occasion it the whole screen was also covered in vertical scanlines, and all of this persisted even when the screen was unplugged from the computer entirely. 😫 I managed to get it sorted out with one of those videos that displays red, green, and blue patterns scrolling and flashing across the screen and leaving it running at max brightness for several hours, but a search of the internet revealed this image retention issue seems to be a fairly widespread problem, ffs.

Since I work from home basically 99% of the time I didn't want to risk having it crap out in the middle of the work so decided to preemptively get another monitor. I was running the LG scaled slightly because at the default 2x scaling everything was too big, so as a result it was just a little blurry compared to my MacBook Pro's internal display. I did a bunch of poking around and ASUS has a 32" 6K monitor, the PA32QCV (rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?) that's very well-reviewed and does HDR and compares very favourably to Apple's 32" 6K monitor at a fraction of the price.

It arrived today and I'm pleased to report that it is indeed an absolute ripper. It required a little fiddling with the settings when HDR mode was on to get everything look good for both SDR and HDR content, but I fired up the HDR copy of The Expanse on it and it looks amazing. For text, everything is crisp and sharp, and the anti-glare coating is so much better than the old LG... the morning sunshine coming into the office in autumn doesn't require me to close one of the curtains so I can read the left side of the monitor now! Interestingly I also have a little bit more screen real estate now, the old monitor was 34" but 21:9, the new one is 16:9 but there are more vertical pixels added than horizontal pixels lost.

I also got the little speaker stands that I got for my birthday set up and it really makes a difference to the sound, the stereo separation is incredible. Very pleased with how clean and tidy my desk setup is now.

Closest to the camera are the five characters of the Romulan team, all in mint green plastic and in mostly not aggressive postures. The other side of the board has the four Klingon warriors, they're all red plastic and are wielding a variety of weapons, both close combat blades like the bat'leth as well as Klingon pistols. The cards for each character are laid out on either side of the board, and there are dice and tokens scattered around.

We played our first two-player game of Star Trek: Away Missions tonight! I played the Romulans who are trying to gain infomation on Borg technology, and @[email protected] played Chancellor Gowron's Klingons who really just wanted to do honorable battle with everyone. The Romulans won 120-65, and I think the Klingons' deck needed a bit of a better shuffling because they were able to score nothing in the first turn oops, though it'll probably go better in future now we've both got a better idea of what cards are actually in the decks and so have more of a sense of how the boards should be placed at the start.

We did the Borg side of the map this time which was pretty cool. I really enjoyed the Romulans' gameplay, it was more about sneaking around trying to gather intel and position your characters carefully. There were a few things I forgot like the ability to spend Intel tokens to move the two Tal Shiar operatives around the board when you complete a Covert mission which would have made it easier to get across the board and complete other missions.

Annoyingly I didn't have enough clear card sleeves for the House of Duras expansion so that'll need to wait until next week, and I've ordered enough spares that all of the extra cards that you can customise the existing decks with will be sleeved too (they all start with a starter deck designed for one specific mission of the two core missions you can choose, then you can customise the decks as you get a handle on how they play and how you want to make changes).

Looking forwards to playing lots more!

I've already read through the Murderbot books via ebook, from that Humble Bundle last year, but I far prefer physical books and will definitely be rereading them at some point so decided to get the actual books. The speaker stands are for putting my fancy Yamaha studio speakers on because it really does make quite a difference having them positioned properly (with the tweeters at ear level). It's meant that I need to totally rejigger my desk and I've realised that the cables I have going to the right speaker are getting very taut with my desk in its full standing position so I've had to order some longer cables so I don't accidentally destroy anything if I make my desk higher than normal for whatever reason. 😬

A photo of the board at the start of the Spearhead game. The art on the board itself looks like it's covered in moss and grass, with large circular stone markers that are the objectives. On the left are the horde of the Gitz, there are two separate squad of ten little goblins holding all sorts of ramshackle weapons, three HUGE trolls in the middle, one of whom is holding a massive boulder over its head like it's about to throw it, and five goblins riding squigs which are basically round balls of muscle with massive teeth. On the right are the Stormcast Eternals who are _significantly_ fewer in number. They're all heavily armoured, three of them have large angel-like wings and are in mid-air, then there's a squad of five warriors, a wizard, and the general who is riding a massive gryphon.

The reason I was in the office was because I was having an introductory game of Spearhead! It's set in the Age of Sigmar (Warhammer Fantasy) universe and is along the same sort of idea as Warhammer 40,000's Combat Patrol in that you have a much smaller number of units than a regular army of the big game, but it's significantly better balanced than Combat Patrol is. You buy a box and that's the whole army, and the rules are very streamlined.

This game was the goblins of the Gloomspite Gitz versus the Stormcast Eternals, the Gitz won 19-15 thanks to a couple of very poor rolls on the Eternals' part at a couple of critical moments. It was pretty fun, but I'm not going to buy an army or one of the core boxes myself because my Kill Team backlog is so large already and the Spearhead armies are a fair bit larger in numbers than you would have for a typical Kill Team squad. 😅

I'm in the office today and met Lucy and Linus who were both VERY soft to pet! Linus subsequently rolled over and demanded belly rubs.
