A photo of the beginning of our Away Missions game. There are a set of interlocking boards with artwork on them that looks like rooms on a Federation starship, with the rooms marked with things like "Engineering", "Bridge", "Sick Bay", etc. The Romulans are all in green plastic, and they're closest to the camera with two deployed on the bridge and the other three in Sick Bay. In the middle of the board are the four Klingons in red plastic, all holding bat'leths or various other Klingon weaponry, two are deployed on one Engineering board and the other two are on the second Engineering board (for a three player game you need two core sets, which means duplicated boards). Then lastly blue plastic of the Federation team, three deployed on the second Bridge board at the right and Dr Crusher and Wesley deployed at the far left in the Science Lab and Transporter Room. There are character boards sitting in front of each of us that have the stats of each character on them, and dice and other tokens scattered around the table.

We went over to @[email protected]'s this afternoon for a three-player game of Star Trek: Away Missions! I played the Romulans, @[email protected] played Chancellor Gowron's Klingons, and @[email protected] played the Federation expansion that has Captain Picard (in his non-Borg form), Geordi, Troy, and both Dr. Crusher and Wesley.

The final score was 140 to the Romulans, 130 to the Klingons, and only 65 for Picard's team, but that downplays how poorly it started out for Gowron, with him and another character being repeatedly stunned by the Federation phasers. By comparison, the other two Klingons on the other side of the board ended up making short work of both Wesley and Dr. Crusher (though in the case of the latter, only after I had grievously wounded her 😅). The Romulans are fun, they're not straightforwardly combat-ready but with the right cards and positioning you can end up rolling the maximum six dice. I had a few misplays and discarded the wrong card because I had forgotten about another card that I needed to use it with and so incorrectly discarded it, but ah well. Picard's team seems interesting, they're more about diplomacy and giving benefits to their enemies but getting a larger benefit in return as well. Very keen to play more, though we're going to see about tweaking the Gowron deck a bit because there are a lot of skill tests but the Klingons aren't very good at actually succeeding at them...

Closest to the camera are the five characters of the Romulan team, all in mint green plastic and in mostly not aggressive postures. The other side of the board has the four Klingon warriors, they're all red plastic and are wielding a variety of weapons, both close combat blades like the bat'leth as well as Klingon pistols. The cards for each character are laid out on either side of the board, and there are dice and tokens scattered around.

We played our first two-player game of Star Trek: Away Missions tonight! I played the Romulans who are trying to gain infomation on Borg technology, and @[email protected] played Chancellor Gowron's Klingons who really just wanted to do honorable battle with everyone. The Romulans won 120-65, and I think the Klingons' deck needed a bit of a better shuffling because they were able to score nothing in the first turn oops, though it'll probably go better in future now we've both got a better idea of what cards are actually in the decks and so have more of a sense of how the boards should be placed at the start.

We did the Borg side of the map this time which was pretty cool. I really enjoyed the Romulans' gameplay, it was more about sneaking around trying to gather intel and position your characters carefully. There were a few things I forgot like the ability to spend Intel tokens to move the two Tal Shiar operatives around the board when you complete a Covert mission which would have made it easier to get across the board and complete other missions.

Annoyingly I didn't have enough clear card sleeves for the House of Duras expansion so that'll need to wait until next week, and I've ordered enough spares that all of the extra cards that you can customise the existing decks with will be sleeved too (they all start with a starter deck designed for one specific mission of the two core missions you can choose, then you can customise the decks as you get a handle on how they play and how you want to make changes).

Looking forwards to playing lots more!

I've already read through the Murderbot books via ebook, from that Humble Bundle last year, but I far prefer physical books and will definitely be rereading them at some point so decided to get the actual books. The speaker stands are for putting my fancy Yamaha studio speakers on because it really does make quite a difference having them positioned properly (with the tweeters at ear level). It's meant that I need to totally rejigger my desk and I've realised that the cables I have going to the right speaker are getting very taut with my desk in its full standing position so I've had to order some longer cables so I don't accidentally destroy anything if I make my desk higher than normal for whatever reason. 😬

A photo of the core box of Star Trek: Away Missions, plus three expansions. They're all quite plain, primarily yellow, and have transparent plastic windows where you can see the miniatures sitting in yellow trays. The core box has four light blue Federation miniatures and six grey Borg, there are two Klingon expansions (Chancellor Gowron which has four miniatures and the House of Duras which has five) both of which have bright red miniatures, and then there's the Romulan expansion for Commander Sela that has five dark-ish green miniatures.

YISSSS.

...now they need to get put away until my birthday next month. 😤 #FirstWorldProblems

To the right are the four Klingons in red plastic, all holding bat'leths or various other Klingon weaponry, and then at the top and left are the blue plastic of the Federation team. There are character boards sitting in front of our chairs that have the stats of each character on them, and dice and other tokens scattered around the table.

We had @[email protected] over for Star Trek: Away Missions, and it was excellent! So much so that I've ordered the base game and some of the expansions for my birthday next month. 😁

I played the Borg, @[email protected] played Chancellor Gowron's Klingons (insert meme here), and @[email protected] was the Federation. It was really good, very close game in end: @[email protected] on 145 points, me on 140, and @[email protected] on 130. I definitely wasted some actions trying to unsuccessfully assimilate the enemy but I was playing the starter deck and I don't think that's set up for really relying on that as a way to score points. I started to get the hang of it by the end and am very keen to play more!

The only thing I'm not a fan of is the fact that they made all the miniatures' heads slightly larger than they should be so they're more like caricatures... kind of ruins the vibe for me, haha.
