Current status: putting the finishing mixing touches on my song and using my fancy speaker setup for its intended purpose!

A multi-display screenshot of my current music production setup. On the main display at the top right is Logic Pro's main window showing the various tracks that have been recorded (or MIDI notes put onto) and the main channel window showing each track and the volume faders along with the various effects that are applied to them. At the left is my internal MacBook Pro display showing Superior Drummer 3's frankly ridiculous "Mixer" tab where you can individually mix and EQ and compress and do basically everything to each separate drum kit piece (kick, snare, hi-hats, even overhead microphones for goodness' sake). Then lastly at the bottom left is my little 13" portable display with four Channel EQ windows showing a visual representation of the frequencies in each track and how they've been adjusted.

I'm working on another song using some of the EZKeys Dark Industrial expansion sounds and MIDI files I bought last month and have discovered just how much of a difference adding EQs to your tracks can change the sound. This feels like a potentially very deep rabbit hole to go down. :ohno:

Okay THIS is cool as hell: one of the features Apple added with the latest Logic Pro update is the ability to split an audio file into its constituent parts (vocals, drums, bass, and "other"), and the guy who did my bass guitar course actually wrote out a bunch of bass lines for a selection of 50 songs of various genres, and one of the ones included is Credence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising". That song is actually in my iTunes library so I dropped it into Logic Pro, had it analyse the tempo so the metronome would match, then ran it through the splitter and muted the bass track. So now I'm actually playing my bass along for reals to the song! 🤘🏻

(The keen-eyed among you may note that the tempo according to Logic Pro is actually twice what it should be, I think the 8th-note hi-hats throw the calculations off but it doesn't really matter.)

I recorded a thing on the drums!! 😁 (The backing track isn't mine, full credit to Jack Curtis; all his stuff is up on Bandcamp, highly recommended).

I screwed up slightly in a couple of places because I'm used to watching the iPad in front of me and knowing when time changes are coming from there but I kept having to look over at the computer to my left instead. I've subsequently realised that I can use the iPad as an extended monitor for the laptop and can move the track time display over to that.

I also discovered the fun* of getting audio and video synced up, and how despite the fact that the iPhone says it's shooting video at 60 frames per second, it's ACTUALLY 59.94 and so by the end of the song the audio I recorded directly in Logic Pro had drifted significantly from the video. Thankfully iMovie has a "Speed Editor" where you can get it all lined back up again.

But eeeee! Absolutely stoked with this!

Yessss, got the Bridge4 configured to control Logic Pro now! So I can start and stop recording, play and pause the existing audio, and switch between and trigger live loops scenes all right from the pedalboard without needing to take my hands off the guitar. 😎

I am having ENTIRELY too much fun in Logic Pro right now. I've taken the song I recorded back in May, recorded a bass track with my guitar amp/load box/audio interface setup, and have turned it into this electronic-sounding thing. (Once I'm happy with it, I'll upload it.)

Also, man, listening to this back again I can really hear that I sucked at keeping the guitar in time with the drums. 😛

A photo of the very complicated user interface of Logic Pro with a recording from my drums. It shows the tempo across the song, and it varies from 118bpm to just under 122bpm which isn't bad given I was aiming for 120!

I ordered a laptop stand so I could have my laptop hooked up to my drums in a more useful position, it arrived today and fits perfectly! So much better than having it dodgily perched on the luggage to the left there. 😛

I also discovered that Logic Pro has a thing where it can pick up the tempo of what you're playing and it lets you adjust it after the fact! I'm a bit shit at keeping time, but I recorded a section by trying to keep a count in my head ("ONE and TWO and THREE and FOUR and") and I actually ended up surprisingly close to 120bpm the whole time.
