I ordered a laptop stand so I could have my laptop hooked up to my drums in a more useful position, it arrived today and fits perfectly! So much better than having it dodgily perched on the luggage to the left there. 😛 I also discovered that Logic Pro has a thing where it can pick up the tempo of what you're playing and it lets you adjust it after the fact! I'm a bit shit at keeping time, but I recorded a section by trying to keep a count in my head ("ONE and TWO and THREE and FOUR and") and I actually ended up surprisingly close to 120bpm the whole time.

My First Song

My guitar amp simulation software of choice has been BIAS FX 2 on my iPad (https://www.positivegrid.com/bias-fx-mobile/) and it's pretty great, but I'm starting to get the point where I'm outgrowing the iPad for what I want to do, I think. I've bought a selection of BIAS FX 2 stuff on desktop, and it comes with Audio Units plugins that you can use in GarageBand and such. It turns out you can get a 90-day trial of Logic Pro, so I'm giving that a red hot go and we'll see if I can manage to make some sort of song! I recorded some drums yesterday today but my biggest issue there is keeping in time, even with a metronome going. 😛 But today I recorded my first song in Logic Pro, with me playing both guitar and drums! 😁 Granted it's less than a minute long and is pretty repetitive, but whatever. Yay! Big thanks to @[email protected] for pointing out Logic's "quantize" functionality that will automatically move your slightly-out-of-time notes to be back in time, very helpful for getting a good drum track. The drums were was just recorded straight into Logic then quantized, rather than playing back again with any of the built-in Roland drum controller kits that the drum kit comes with (I haven't even looked into how that's done yet), and the guitar was recorded with one of Positive Grid's "BIAS Pedal" effects.

My First Drum Solo

I made my first drum recording in GarageBand! 😁 Very short, but whatever. I've been mucking around on the guitar with that as the backing track, haha.

I made some guitar-related purchases! I needed a new strap because I'm pretty sure the one I was using was the original Fender one from my first guitar kit from like fourteen years ago, and it was starting to tear where the strap hooks onto the guitar, so I got a handsome new black leather one. The other bit was a trigger capo because the next section of my Fender Play learnings needs it.

A screenshot of the iPad app "Melodics". It's showing a pattern of notes to hit on the drums, right/left/right/right/left/right/left/left on the hi-hat and snare, so you end up doing in groups of three, but for the kick drum it's on every second note.

I'm still doing my drum practicing, currently learning some grooves that include paradiddles, and one rhythm for my hands and an entirely different one for my foot is totally breaking my brain!

A small (~30cm wide) horizontal speaker with a light grey mesh on the front. The speaker body is made of walnut and it's quite charmingly retro-looking.

The same speaker but without the grill, showing the individual speakers inside it. There's two woofers towards the middle, and two tweeters on either end.

Both my USB guitar input and electronic drum set have headphone jacks on them, and no way to get actual audio out of them without plugging into that. If I'm using headphones by myself that's fine, but if I want to be showing someone else while hearing what I'm doing, it's a bit of a problem! I looked into Bluetooth speakers that have 3.5mm jacks as well (we've got a little Bluetooth speaker that I use to listen to music from my phone when I'm out in the back room doing my painting and it does okay, but the sound quality's not great plus it lacks any way of getting audio to it except Bluetooth), and decided to get the Audioengine B2. It arrived today and is both very handsome and sounds quite good!

A photo of the MadCatz Rock Band MIDI adapter controller, used for plugging my drum kit into the Xbox 360 for use with Guitar Hero.

Aww yisssss! (Now hopefully it works with Guitar Hero... I've seen anecdotal reports that it does, but nothing official from the manufacturer). Also this controller is over ten years old now and the plastic is doing that weird thing where it gets sticky, so I'll need to clean it up.
