We had our regular fortnightly Sunday night Kill Team tonight, same composition as before (my Intercession squad versus Night Lords versus Adeptus Custodes) but after the previous game we'd decided we'd see about tweaking the map a bit for this game. It's completely symmetrical now and had five objectives instead of three, with two objectives being in easy reach of the middle spot but being harder to defend. The Custodes ended up in that centre deployment zone, and man it was a fun game! The Custodes all had shields so they were tough as nails (2+ save, 4+ invulnerable save), and two operatives each immediately moved on the middle points and it really felt like they were completely dug in so we had to play cagey and try to bait them out without being murderised in the process. The funniest point was one of the Custodes charging into close combat with THREE of the Night Lords, unsurprisingly he ended up dying but he did a hell of a lot of damage. Between my Spaces Marines and the Nightlords, we ended up wiping out the Custodes, and it was 5-5-4 at the start of the final turn. I was SO CLOSE to pulling off a win, but the Night Lords ended up pipping me at the last minute with a combination of their special rule of not being able to be shot at if they're within 1" of heavy cover and are in conceal, and an ability that lets them force your one of your operatives to make a dash action. I had two operatives on the final objective, but he was able to push one of them off and because this same character was an icon bearer it meant he counted for more when calculating who controlled the objective, and so he was able to steal it. It was 100% luck because that character happened to be the who was in the right spot at the right time and was JUST able to make it onto the objective by the thinnest of margins. In retrospect I should have moved Sister Dominea up to just block the hallway because it wouldn't have mattered if she was killed in close combat or not and the Night Lords couldn't have gotten past her and stolen the objective! The final score ended up being 8-7-4 Nightlords/Intercession/Custodes.
