I'm in the office today and met Lucy and Linus who were both VERY soft to pet! Linus subsequently rolled over and demanded belly rubs.

A photo of the beginning of our game, it's been set up on our dining table. There are a set of interlocking boards with artwork on them that looks like rooms on a Federation starship, with the rooms marked with things like "Engineering", "Bridge", "Sick Bay", etc. The Borg are all in grey plastic, and they're closest to the camera with two deployed in Engineering and the others not deployed yet. To the right are the four Klingons in red plastic, all holding bat'leths or various other Klingon weaponry, and then at the top and left are the blue plastic of the Federation team. There are character boards sitting in front of our chairs that have the stats of each character on them, and dice and other tokens scattered around the table.

We had @[email protected] over for Star Trek: Away Missions, and it was excellent! So much so that I've ordered the base game and some of the expansions for my birthday next month. 😁

I played the Borg, @[email protected] played Chancellor Gowron's Klingons (insert meme here), and @[email protected] was the Federation. It was really good, very close game in end: @[email protected] on 145 points, me on 140, and @[email protected] on 130. I definitely wasted some actions trying to unsuccessfully assimilate the enemy but I was playing the starter deck and I don't think that's set up for really relying on that as a way to score points. I started to get the hang of it by the end and am very keen to play more!

The only thing I'm not a fan of is the fact that they made all the miniatures' heads slightly larger than they should be so they're more like caricatures... kind of ruins the vibe for me, haha.

A screenshot of a section of the "food court" in Star Wars: Outlaws, in the middle is what looks like a very small bar with stools except it's serving food made by a tall cylindrical droid, and scattered about in front are tables with people sitting at them with plates of food and drink in front of them. There a few aliens and humans standing around having conversations as well. The whole scene is indoors with huge cylindrical range pillars rising up, and all the walls are grimy-looking grey/brown metal.

Another screenshot looking into one of the food vendors' shops, this one has a bunch of enormous saucepans with some sort of food in them sitting at the back of shop, bottles and pans on shelves on the wall, and there is a human sitting down on a cylindrical container looking at whatever the Star Wars equivalent of an iPad is, and a Twi'lek crouched down stirring a pot of red sauce of some sort. The whole area is quite small and looks smoky.

Another screenshot, this one is of a smallish shop that's absolutely jam-packed with random bits and bobs on every available horizontal service and some spilling down onto the floor. It looks like it might be a pawn shop, and there are two deactivated protocol droids standing at the right. The shop owner is at the far end and has green skin and is behind the counter, and there are two aliens in conversation at the left.

Another screenshot, this looks almost like a street marketplace you'd see in our world, with vendors having their little stalls with baskets with piles of things in them. The walls around the edges of the marketplace are grimy-looking metal, there are various aliens both as vendors and buying things, and two Imperial Stormtroopers in the middle of walking around keeping an eye on things. The whole scene is lit in a garish reddy/orange colour.

I'm finally doing some gaming on the Xbox after many many months! I'd picked up Star Wars: Outlaws on super-special a while ago but hadn't actually played it yet so I figured I'd give it a go.

I've only been playing for a few hours and am only on the second planet, but they've done such a good job capturing the feel of the ordinary, grimy side of the Star Wars universe. I've been tootling around the Market District in Mirogana and I love all the little details they've added, there's a food court with people sitting around eating or ordering food from the vendors, there are little hole-in-the-wall vendors making food or selling or repairing electronics or other things, random droids wandering around, and then the underlying menace from seeing Stormtroopers marching about on patrol too. As well as people speaking Basic, you've also got the various alien languages as well, most of them exactly how they'd sound from the movies, and the whole atmosphere is so well-done.

A photo of my home office desk setup: an expanse of white desk with a 34" ultrawide monitor in the middle, and my laptop to the left looking like it's suspended in mid-air, sitting on its shiny new monitor arm/laptop mount. Underneath the main monitor is a USB audio interface and guitar load box.

I wanted to get a pair of Yamaha studio speakers so I can listen to and mix my songs on good speakers without needing to cart my laptop down to the lounge room and plug it into the amplifier there, but I'm quite short on space on my desk. I could fit the speakers but the left one would have to go exactly where my laptop stand was. I was doing a bunch of poking around trying to figure out what I could do, and discovered that you can get VESA laptop mounts that attach to a regular monitor arm!

So I bought a mount from Desky and another Ergotron monitor arm (I've already got my monitor mounted on one), the laptop mount arrived yesterday and the arm today, so now I'm all set up!

...now hopefully the studio speakers actually ship soon. 😛

A multi-display screenshot of my current music production setup. On the main display at the top right is Logic Pro's main window showing the various tracks that have been recorded (or MIDI notes put onto) and the main channel window showing each track and the volume faders along with the various effects that are applied to them. At the left is my internal MacBook Pro display showing Superior Drummer 3's frankly ridiculous "Mixer" tab where you can individually mix and EQ and compress and do basically everything to each separate drum kit piece (kick, snare, hi-hats, even overhead microphones for goodness' sake). Then lastly at the bottom left is my little 13" portable display with four Channel EQ windows showing a visual representation of the frequencies in each track and how they've been adjusted.

I'm working on another song using some of the EZKeys Dark Industrial expansion sounds and MIDI files I bought last month and have discovered just how much of a difference adding EQs to your tracks can change the sound. This feels like a potentially very deep rabbit hole to go down. :ohno:

A photo of a game of Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team. The board looks like the metal of the inside of an ancient steampunk starship, and the terrain is a bunch of walls all connected together in the same steampunk style to form number of interconnecting rooms. At the bottom left closest to the camera are my six converted all-women Space Marines clad in deep red armour and at the top left are the five similarly-armoured Space Marines of the Deathwatch in dark blue armour. Lastly at the top right are the eleven miniatures of the Sanctifiers who are basically just regular humans but religiously fanatic and just wearing robes and brandishing holy books and flamers.

In the office again today, this time for after-work Kill Team. My Angels of Death vs. the Deathwatch vs. Sanctifiers.

It was one of those games where my dice rolling was just fucked, on multiple occasions I needed 3s to either hit something or or save something, and rolled all 2s. I can't even tell if my game plan was decent or not because the rolling was so shit. I left before the game was finished because my train was coming and I was down to one single miniature left and was not even slightly going to get anything but dead last, ugh. I don't mind losing as long as the game is decent, but this was decidedly not. 😞

A high-contrast black and white photo looking down onto part of the Sydney CBD from the 30th floor of our office. Lots of tall modern buildings interspersed with the older shorter ones that have been here for decades.

I'm in the office today for the first time this year for an after-work music jam!

My RAW-taking photo app of choice is Halide and they released a preview today of the next version of it, which includes a black-and-white process and my goodness does it look nice. It's even more striking looking at the original HDR image but that all gets stripped out when my website resizes the image and removes the EXIF data (and I also don't know if GoToSocial would keep it as HDR either).

A photo of the (fake) Christmas tree at my parents' place. It's pretty big, probably close to 2 metres tall, and covered in lights and decorations. Christmassy without veering completely into "explosion in a Christmas shop".

A photo of my Christmas haul: eleven paperback books (mostly scifi), a Fender "Telepath" wireless system for being able to play guitar through my amp without needing a physical cable, and the Ahriman miniature from Warhammer: The Horus Heresy. The art on the front is a Space Marine in ornate red and gold armour with a kind of Egyptian feel going on.
